Welcome to the Rensselaer Libraries. The librarians and library staff are here to help you with your research and teaching needs. We hope this guide will provide a useful starting point for access to library information and services.

Access The Folsom and Architecture Libraries are open to members of the Rensselaer community and the general public during posted service hours. Building access to the Folsom Library after 9:00 PM requires either a current Rensselaer ID card or other picture ID.

Book Loans Most book loans from the Rensselaer Libraries are for 16 weeks, but subject to recall for other researchers. Other kinds of materials such DVDs have shorter loan periods.

You can also initiate book loans from any of the other 13 libraries comprising the Connect NY Consortium when using either Rensselaer's Library Catalog or the special Connect NY Catalog . The combined collections of these libraries give you access to over 5 million books. These books are loaned for 3 weeks and are typically delivered within 2 - 4 days to the Folsom Library.

You may also borrow books in person from many other area academic libraries by presenting a special Direct Access identification card available from either the Architecture or Folsom Library circulation desks.

Class Reserves The Libraries' Circulation staff supervise the use of library and other materials, including electronic resources, designated by faculty as important to the teaching of specific classes. Materials are listed under course name in the Rensselaer Libraries' CLASS RESERVE database as they become available for use. Access to certain resources in this database is restricted to Rensselaer faculty, staff and students in order to comply with copyright law and various licensing agreements. Details of class reserves policies and procedures can be reviewed from the Faculty Usage of Class Reserves page.

Electronic Resources Access to most licensed electronic resources requires authentication by your current RIN and Library PIN when you are off campus.
  • Note: SciFinder Scholar , the online version of Chemical Abstracts, and Forrester Research, a market research database, are available only on campus.

License agreements also prohibit the use of these resources in support of commercial purposes by all users including Rensselaer faculty, staff and students. These purposes include, but are not limited to, students co-op or other internships as well as faculty engaged in consulting activities.

Use of electronic resources is regularly monitored by library staff and vendors. Violation of licensing agreements may lead to loss of your library or other privileges as well as jeopardize conitnued campus access to a paticular resource. If you have any questions about contractual obligations or your own proposed use, please contact us.

Interlibrary Loan The Libraries' Interlibrary Loan service will try to obtain published materials which are not part of Rensselaer Libraries' collections and not available through the Connect NY Catalog. Requests for books, journal articles or other publications must be submitted via the Research Libraries' ILLiad system. You can also route requests to the ILLiad system while using many of the Research Libraries' research databases by clicking on the "Request document via ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Service" link that appears on the SFX SFX page.

Subject Librarians Each academic school or department has a subject librarian associated with it. These Librarians are available to meet with you to discuss your information needs, to update you about new library resources, and to notify you of new library materials. They are also eager to work with you on library-related class assignments and to meet with your classes about library resources.

In addition to teaching specific course-related library classes, librarians regularly offer workshops and seminars using library resources. Look for more information on the Library Classes and Workshop page.

Scanning & photocopy services The libraries offer photocopy services for both print and microform materials. Photocopy machines accept coins and bills, but there is no charge for printing microforms. Researchers may also submit requests via the ILLiad interlibrary loan system to have library staff retrieve and copy journal articles. Unless otherwise instructed, requested materials will be scanned and sent by email as PDFs.

Study rooms The Folsom Library has a limited number of individual study rooms available for semester-long assignment to individual Rensselaer faculty, research staff, and graduate students who are engaged in library-oriented phases of research.
