Interlibrary Loan Policies for Other Libraries & Unaffiliated Researchers

The Rensselaer Libraries' InterLibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service provides InterLibrary service to other libraries as summarized below. The Rensselaer Libraries also will attempt to provide single copies of Rensselaer theses and journal articles from its collections at cost to unaffiliated researchers who may not have convenient access to local library services. Loan of Books and Other General Circulating Materials
Circulating items are loaned for 4 weeks from the date of shipment. Loan renewals must be requested in advance of loan expiration. Libraries failing to return items after loan expiration will be subject to billing procedures and loss of borrowing privileges. Audio visual or electronic materials, journals, maps, microforms, reference books, or Rensselaer theses are not available for loan. Ordering Rensselaer
Theses
The below photocopy charges apply for materials between 1 and 30 pages requested by libraries withour reciprocal agreements. Requests for copies of materials over 30 pages are considered on a case by case basis. Delivery is either by US Mail or ARIEL. Information about special handling and ordering theses appears lower on the page.
The InterLibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service will
provide cost estimates for providing a single photocopy,
scanned or PDF version of any Rensselaer thesis. A few theses
containing large scale drawings and/or brittle paper cannot
be photocopied. Supplemental parts of theses, e.g. video and
audio excerpts, generally cannot be duplicated.
Special Handling
Costs include a $15.00 handling fee plus a $ .20 per page photocopying fee. (A typical master's thesis is about 125 pages; a typical PhD thesis is about 200 pages.) Air Mail delivery is extra. Allow 2 - 4 weeks for surface delivery. When possible PDF copies will be sent as email attachments or arrangements can be made for file downloading. Libraries will be billed directly or charged via OCLC's IFM system. PhD theses dating from 1950 to the present also may be ordered from University Microfilm International's (UMI) Dissertation Abstract Service. RUSH PROCESSING - $25.00 per request plus regular
charges (includes US MAIL or ARIEL delivery.) The Rensselaer
Libraries will retrieve and ready for shipment, if available,
requested materials within 24 hours or receipt of a request
received Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM
EST.
