Posted: Oct 21, 2015

Two Numeric Classification Systems for Collecting Company and Industry Data

Standard Industrial Classification System (SIC)
Example:2086 (Bottled & Canned Soft Drinks)

How SIC Differs from NAICS

  • Older classification system - Dates back to 1930s
  • Fewer categories for classification
  • Precedes growth of service and technology industries

North American Industrial Classification Systems (NAICS)
Example:312111 (Soft Drink Manufacturing)

How NAICS Differs from SIC

  • Newer classification system - Dates back to 1980s
  • More classification categories
  • Accommodates growth of service and technology industries

Primary SIC or NAICS = Primary line of business for a company or industry

Secondary SIC or NAICS = Secondary line of business for a company or industry

  • Secondary SIC and NAICS codes can vary from source-to-source
  • Secondary SIC and NAICS codes are often assigned by a commercial database vendor
  • Company can have more than one secondary SIC or NAICS
