Like other library collections, class reserve materials are a resource to be shared and used cooperatively by members of the Rensselaer community in accordance the policies and practices desribed below. Access Available materials are listed under course name in the Libraries' CLASS RESERVE database. Use of some resources is restricted to Rensselaer faculty, staff and students in order to comply with copyright law and various licensing agreements. Print copies of most class-assigned readings and homework answers, software, sound recordings, video tapes etc. may be obtained from the Folsom Service Desk. Materials for architecture courses should be requested from the Architecture Library. Copies of items kept in folders or uncataloged materials must be requested by specifying the course and item number as displayed in the CLASS RESERVE database. Library books must be requested by call number. Loan of Class Reserve materials stops 15 minutes before the Service Counter closes. Conditions of Loan Use of most materials requires deposit of acceptable positive identification: Rensselaer or other college ID card; Rensselaer Libraries' Courtesy or Research Card, CDLC Direct Access Card; or current driver's license. Except for a few books designated for Overnight or Special Loan, materials generally are restricted to "Building Use Only." Fines may be assessed for the late return of materials and/or the unauthorized removal of materials from the library facilities during loan periods. Loan Periods and Loan Limits Loan periods appear on the orange RESERVE USE POLICIES slips inside of folders and at the top of blue Reserve Loan signature cards. Loan periods and the number of items one person may use at one time varies depending on type of material and current demand. Usage is usually limited to 30 minutes for folders with a loan limit of three (3) items. Loan periods for class-assigned materials are determined by Library staff in consultation with faculty. Overnight and Special Loans A few class-assigned books are available for overnight or longer loan. Overnight loans require deposit of ID and must be returned the next day to the Service Desk within the first hour of service. Overnight loans are not made earlier than 30 minutes before the close of the Service Counter and are not made when the Folsom Library is open for additional hours of study at the end of semesters. Materials available for longer loans do not require ID deposit, but must be returned immediately upon loan expiration. Late Return FinesBorrowers returning material late to the Service Desk or taking "Building Use Only" materials outside of library facilities are subject to fines. Late Return fines are charged at the rate of $1.00 per half hour including any fraction of a half hour interval. Items not returned after 12 hours will be considered LOST, and the borrower will be billed for the greater amount of either the item's replacement cost plus a $10.00 processing fee or $24.00. The replacement cost of photocopied material is considered to be the $24.00 maximum late return fine. A $10.00 fine is also assessed for taking materials outside of the libraries. Unpaid fines will be referred to the Bursar's Office for collection, and general borrowing and interlibrary loan privileges may be suspended until fines are settled. Persons in flagrant violation of Reserve Desk policies will be referred to the Dean of Students Office for disciplinary action. Faculty will also be advised of violations affecting individual or group academic performance. Inquiries and AppealsInquiries concerning billing and other circulation records should be directed to the Folsom Service Desk Mondays through Fridays between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM and to the Architecture Service Desk Monday through Fridays between 8:3O PM and 4:30 PM.
