How do I check out books?
Current students, faculty and staff use their Rensselaer ID Card to check out library material at the Circulation Desk.
I am not from RPI. Can I use the library?
The Architecture Library is open to the general public during regular business hours. However the Greene Building is limited to the School of Architecture and other approved community after 5:00pm and on weekends. The building is accessible those hours by entry through the RCS ID card access system. Use of services, equipment and materials are welcome provided they meet our conditions of use.
How many books can I check out?
There is a 75 item limit for Rensselaer faculty, staff, students, retirees, and affiliates. Rensselaer alumni and CDLC Direct Access users have a 3 item limit.
How long can I keep a book?
Rensselaer faculty, staff, students, retirees, and affiliates can keep items for 16 weeks. Rensselaer alumni and CDLC Direct Access users have 3 week loans. All loans are subject to recall.
How do I renew books?
How can I get a book that is already checked out?
Recall or hold. You can place a recall or hold on an item yourself from within a library search result. Once you are on the record of an item, which is already checked out to someone, simply click the "Request" button at the top and fill in your RCS ID and password or your library account information. This is similar to the renew process or stop by the Circulation Desk in you need assistance.
Can I check out journals?
Print journals are for library use only. They can not be checked out except under unusual circumstances and with approval from the Architecture Librarian. The Architecture Library has 6 flatbed scanners in the public search area for scanning non-circulating items such as journals. There is also a photocopier.
Can I check out GA Documents?
Like journals, GA Documents are for library use only. They can not be checked out.
Can I return Folsom books to the Architecture Library?
Yes. You can do the opposite as well.
How do I return books if the library is closed?
There is a book drop box outside the main entrance to Folsom Library.
I received an email with a new due date. Why do I have to return the book before the stamped due date?
All loans are subject to recall for class reserves or by another library user.
What happens if I return a book late?
We allow a 10 day grace period for overdue books.
What happens if I lose a book?
You can either pay the replacement fee or purchase an approved replacement.
I brought my book to studio to share and now I can not find it. Am I still responsible for replacing it?
Getting books that are already checked out or unavailable
I need a book that is already checked out. How can I get it?
Request a recall. See the procedure described above or stop by the Circulation Desk for assistance.
What do I do if I can't find a book on the shelf?
Ask for help at the Circulation Desk. If the item can not immediately be found, we ask that you fill out a "search request" form. We will do a more exhaustive search.
The library does not have the book I need. What do I do?
You can try to obtain it through Connect NY or InterLibrary Loan (ILLIAD) We can give your a DAP card to borrow it from participating local libraries. If it can not be obtained through any of these services, you can recommend we purchase it.
